“How was Australia affected by the depression in the late 1920’s?”

Australia was affected in many ways by the great depression in 1920’s. It started with the borrowing of large sums of money from Australia’s mother country; Great Britain. With the already shaky economy, the stock market crashed which had serious implications for Australia. Much of the working class were without jobs, thus having no financial support for their family. Farmers and unskilled labourers still had work, but little pay. The unemployed had no work, and advertised jobs had hundreds of hopeful employees queuing up for a chance to support their family. The professional class were least affected, and still were able to support their families, even doing this however stretched the budget.

Chapter Summary –

Posted by: | September 12, 2011 | No Comment |

• Australia’s prosperity was based on the fact that they were able to borrow large amounts of money from Great Britain. • In the year before the depression, Australia borrowed over 52 million pounds from Britain alone. • Many Australians lost their jobs as a result, and became unemployed. • The professional class were least affected, and suffered little. • In the middle of 1933, 12 per cent of men with families earned nothing at all, while another 17 per cent earned less than £2 a week, which was well below the basic wage. • At the start of the depression the unemployed looked to charities for help, but as the number of unemployed grew the charities could not cope and the state governments had to introduce assistance schemes. • Not every Australian suffered the severe hardship and distress associated with the Great Depression. • Some Australians who were not affected by the depression sought to help those who were. • Other Australians who were not affected by the depression lived in a world remote from the experience of those who were suffering hardship. • The Labor government of James Scullin came to power in October 1929 just in time to face the full impact of the failing Australian economy.

  1. The scheme was introduced to help relieve the pressure that society was putting on the returned soldiers, and to help them ease back into the peaceful world.
  2. It was implemented with grants of free land to veterans, on which they could farm, live and generate profit. Soldiers were also given houses that were available at cheap rates, to help advance them in their working class.
  3. The scheme was unsuccessful due to the fact that much of the land was unable to be farmed on, resulting in loss of profit, and despair to many citizens. However, one may argue that the scheme was a valuable asset to the economy.
  4. With the current issue of asylum seekers, a scheme may be implemented to help the “selection” process much easier, faster, and ultimately more efficient. Another scheme could also be introduced to ease the pain of the Australian Indigenous society, by offering financial incentives and other support/assistance.

Second Hand Smoke?

Posted by: | August 2, 2011 | 1 Comment |

Smoking at home may soon be banned,

writes David Williamson

The possibility of a ban follows the controversy earlier this month after apartment owners in a building in Sydney’s inner west Unit introduced a bylaw to stop anyone smoking anywhere within the building and on its balconies.

Writing in today’s newspaper, it says the ban could soon become nationwide as more people object to second-hand smoke is seeping into their apartments and homes.

Several smoking laws have been imposed in places like New York and London, in order to reduce the amount of second hand smoke being inhaled from passer-byes.

Tenants and apartment owners both agree that there is a serious risk imposed to them living in areas near smokers, as the smoke seeps into all places of the apartment.

If a ban does go ahead, it would mean and soon smokers may not even be allowed to light up in their own homes or anywhere in public.

Hello, today we made a survey in class to see which digital media games were the most popular. People in the class entered their results into a form we created in Google Documents. Here is the link: https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=tTw-ZYqepMF5siXIyIGuG3w/
